Shields up, camo cloaks on and the Khan survives all.

Got another league practice game under my belt, and boy was it a weird one.  To the outside observer, I lost the game BAD.  The two models pictured below (Khan and another biker) were all that was left of my army.  My opponents army suffered minimal losses. Oh and I won.

How you might ask?  Well the mission was The Relic(the red objective marker in the picture) which at the end of the game no one controlled.  So it went down to secondary objectives.  My opponent has First Blood .  I had Line breaker, and Slay the warlord.  I won the game 2 - 1.

The dice hated me for most of the game.  I botched tons of reserve rolls.  At one point in the game, I had a single scout left alive on the board and the majority of my army waiting to come on the board.  So hands down MVP goes to that scout.  He stood alone on a battle field full of Eldar and lived to tell the tale.

With the amount of reserve rolls I need, I'm considering an aegis/comms relay. Not sure what I'll need to cut for the 70 points, but I think it will be worth it on games where I run the Khan and 4 flyers.

Here is the finalised list that I provided for the league.

My week 1 matchup is against Khrone Deamons.  Never faced off against the new deamons so I'll be interested in seeing how that goes.

On the modelling/painting side of the world.  I very stupidly forgot to put cloaks on my scouts before priming them.  I've added those on.

My shields have arrived and I'm impressed.  To be honest,  I think I like the finished product better than I liked the display images on the website, which when you order random parts from random miniature companies tends not to be the case very often.

I'm looking forward to painting them up and throwing some magnets onto them for use with the command squad.

I'll do my best to take pictures and do a  more detail breakdown on the first game of the league, but anyone that reads this regularly knows... I'm not so good at remembering to take pictures during the heat of things.

League Lists, painting and more!

League prep is in full force.  Got another game in with what has become my standard bike list.

Me vs Tyranids... Have I mentioned how much I HATE Tyranids.  It's just a bad matchup for me.  I need to kill like 10-15 of them for every 1 of my models that go down.  Then when your planes get lost on the way and don't show up till Turn 4.  It's not going to be your day.  Lots of things didn't go my way this day, and me not being very good didn't help me much either.  If I had to pick an MVP, it would be the terminators.  They were beasts when it came to making those 2+ armor saves and killing bugs.  LVP were the pilots of the storm talons.  Once they finally arrived they were doing damage, but I needed them another turn or so earlier to have made any significant difference.

As much as it pains me to say it, I think from now on when I play the standard Psychic Chorus style Tyranid list, I need to play with a tie in mind.  I think if I just hang back and pray to survive I'd do better than my usual "kill em all" style. (Once an Ogre player, always an Ogre player)  I'm really trying to remind myself that 40k is my play for fun game, and Fantasy is where I become a competitive asshole, but that side of me is always there.

Here is my newest list for the league.

    * Thunderfire Cannon (100pts)

Yeah that's right.  4 Flyers and 2 TFC.  I know there are def flaws in this list.  Bikes are prob not the BEST troop choice for this list, but I did throw in another unit of scouts and increased their sizes to 6.  This meant buying more scouts.

Thank god for Bitzbarn.  I know I've went on and on about how much I love them so I'll spare you that rant again. My bitz arrived in the mail yesterday and before the end of the night, I had assembled, primed and did some painting.

I wanted to make the Scout Sergeant different looking that the rest of the squad, and I've found these Bretonian bowmen bodies.

Just something to make them look a little different.  I might decide on something else down the road, maybe something that looks a little more native americany but for not it'll do... plus it was like 50 cents for the whole body.

The yellow facepaint didn't really photograph well.

I played a test game vs another league member on Sunday.  Another bike vs bike fight.. except these bikes were Eldar.

The Blank base was my 2nd Stormtalon but more on that later.

I feel like I did learn a lot from the prep game.  I'd like to get another game or two in before the start just to work out some things, but all in all I like the army list. 40k will never replace my love of Fantasy, but it's growing more and more on me.

Some of you might have noticed(or read the caption below the photo) that I was running a blank base in my army. On Sunday I bought a 2nd Stormtalon before the game.  Anyone that knows me knows that I HAAATTTTEEE fielding unpainted models, let alone fielding an unassembled one, but my gracious opponent was ok with since we were prepping for the league.

Monday afternoon I started working on the kit.  Being my 2nd one, it was much easier this time around.  I also was hit with one of my spells of insomnia and didn't go to bed on Monday.  So I've gotten a TON done.

Always remember to take an animal cracker break.

Off with their heads....errr... On with their heads!?!

A quick painting update, not much going on there.  I've been taking a break from it.

Hopefully I can get these finished tonight and start attaching them to everyone.

Today I am going to place an order for my "Storm Shields" that I'll need for my Command Squad and a unit of 10 Thunderhammer Terminators.  After scouring the internet, I've found the shields I want.

They're made by a British company called The Assault Group.  I can say already that I love this company.  I was looking at them in the past when I was looking for tomahawks.  They sent me free samples.  Also, I've had a few questions and they've been very quick to respond.  Hopefully I'll have some shields to show you soon.

Expect some more 40k updates in the coming weeks.  I've joined a league that starts on April 8th so I'll have lots of losses to discuss.

Puppetswar delivery!

There was a magical knock at the door this Saturday.  The mail lady asked me to sign for a package and I ran through around the house like a kid on Christmas morning.  Finally my stuff from Puppetswar had arrived.

I got 1 set of Autocannon arms and 40+ heads.  I say 40+ because I ordered 40 and they gave me more.  Some of the casts weren't perfect so they gave me the miscast ones and some.  Some of the miscast ones aren't too bad so I'll prob just use them anyways.

Enough mindless chatter.. on with the pictures!

Cause 19 out of 24... Ain't bad!

The standings for the 40k tournament were released today it appears that I got 19th.. which to be honest makes me EXTREEEEEMMMMMEELLLLY happy.  I'm pretty sure my first fantasy tournament I did much worse.  I honestly had expected to finish DFL.

The scores for painting were released as well.  I got 12 of the 25 points, which I think it pretty good given that almost none of my models had heads, and a good bit of my army was unfinished, as well as having made some last minute shields to stand is as Storm shields that were essentially green stuff circles.

Hopefully, my stuff will arrive from puppetswar today.  I told myself I was going to take a break from painting since I don't see any tournaments on the horizon, but I really would like to start finishing up what I have so I can order some new stuff to start working on.  I'm def in the market for another Ravenwing battalion box so I can make another Thunderfire and flesh out my bike squads a little more.  Running them with such a low model count at the tournament was a risk that I was forced to take.

My next plans are to figure up some allies to help me with my weaknesses.  I'm considering Space Wolves or Imperial Guard.

Baby's First 40k Tournament

So I finally decided that it was time to bring my bike army out and dive into the insanity of competitive 40k. So I went the Beltway Gamers First Blood 2013 40k Tournament.

I had to make some last minute changes to what I would have LIKED to run because I didn't get the all the bitz I wanted.  I finally ordered all the heads I would need from Puppetswar along with some twin-linked autocannon arms, but it didn't get here in time.  So the morning of, I finally decided on this.

So lets get down to it.
Rounds 1:  Codex Space Marines
Chaplain on Foot
Chaplain w/ Jump Pack
10 man Tac Squad - Flamer, Plasma Cannon
10 man Tac Squad - Flamer, Plasma Cannon
10 man Tac Squad - Meltagun, Multimelta, Rhino
10 man Devastator Squad - 4x Lascannon
10 man Devastator Squad - 4x Heavy Bolter
10 Assault Squad - Jump Packs 2xFlamers
Bastion
Primary Mission:  Control the Relic
Secondary Mission:  Victory Points
Tertiary Mission:  Whoever has the most points from (Linebreaker, Slay the Warlord, First Blood)
Deployment along the short table edges.
My opponents army was VERY shooty.  Which I knew would be somewhat of an advantage to me because he would need to come get the relic from the center of the board.  My bikes would be able to close in on it quickly and all I would have to do is survive the onslaught barrage of incoming fire.

Sadly this was the one and only gameplay shot I remember to take all day.
The real turning point of the game is when the Khan's squad turned up and on the flank and he turned his ENTIRE army and unloaded on them. Storm Shields and Feel No Pain to the rescue.  I squad suffered minimal casualties.  Maybe 1 or 2. The command squad did what it does best, hurt people.  In the last turn I had the relic in my possession and my opponent unloaded on that bike unit.  Thankfully they survived the onslaught giving me a win.

I won Primary and Secondary Mission giving myself a whopping 17 points.

I managed to win my first tournament game.. which was a TOTAL shock to me.

The Thunderfire cannon was MVP.
LVP was the terminator squad.  They were actually the first unit to go down and cough up the point for First Blood.

The problem with winning is that you then get paired up with someone who also won their first game which gave me the pleasure of going up against Dameon Green's Bike Army.  It was a very Student meets the Master moment for me because when it comes to running bikes, I don't know if there is anyone who does it better.. at least that I know of.

Round 2: Codex Space Marines
Mirror match (well in my case its kinda like a funhouse mirror match where he was the normal side of the mirror and I was the fat ugly mutant side of the mirror)

Primary Force

Kor'sarro Khan on bike

3x Twin linked Autocannon Dreadoughts

7 man Bike Squad, 2x meltagun, Attack Bike MM, melta bombs

7 man Bike Squad, 2x meltagun, Attack Bike MM, melta bombs

3x Thunderfire cannon

Aliied Force Dark Angels

Librarian on Bike. LVL 2

Scout Squad w/ Sniper rifles

Devastator Squad 4x Plasma Cannons

Ravenwing DeathShroud

Diagonal Board deployment

Primary Mission:  Each Player has an objective, player who controls the most objectives wins

Secondary Mission: Nominate a single model to be a "messenger".  If that messenger is within 3 inches of either objective at the end of the game.

Tertiary Mission:  Whoever has the most points from (Linebreaker, Slay the Warlord, First Blood)

I am really glad that I got paired up with him.  It was def a learning experience. (We both knew how the game was going to end so it was became a bit of teaching game.. we bike armies gotta stick together)  I learned a lot about love that summer.. I mean about bikes that game.

I had one shot at making this game respectable... and that was for my thunderfire cannon to take out his.  The dice gods ensure that wasn't going to happen.  He turned his 2 TFC and dreads onto mine and blew it me out of the water.  My Khan decided to come in on the wrong table edge after that and it sealed my fate.  I tried holing up and playing for a draw, but his khan and bike squad came out on my side of the board.  So we got into a few rounds of epic Khan on Khan challenges.  Sadly neither of us could hit with our instant death swords so in the end no Khans were killed in that combat.  He hit and ran out of combat and headed for home.

For the sake of the tournament we played I wanted to play it through to the end because I knew he'd be in the running for best overall and I didn't want to concede any points to him for fairness sake.  It did make a difference.. In the last turn of the game, my Stormtalon ran his messenger off the board.. Causing us to tie on the secondary mission.  (In the end, he still won the tournament)

MVP: Stormtalon!  I think I'd like running another one of those and see how much damage I can do.

LVP:  Scout squad.  Not really their fault, but camo cloaks do nothing against Ignore cover thunderfire rounds.

Loss for me.

Round 3:  Tyranids

There is not a lot to say about this one.  My opponent and I both agreed that the summary of this game was "There was a lot of templates and tears"   The mission for this game was d3+2 objectives.  and we rolled and got the special rule that extends the range of everyone's shooting by 6 inches.  I was DESTROYED.

Our game ended pretty quick.  Everyone who looked at our board and we told them what special rules we got just kinda went.. Oh.. wow...   Great opponent.  Great Army.. I was dead before turn 1.  He had me outclassed in every way.

I learned a lot from my first tournament. I've already thought a few dozen ways to make my army better.  I'll go into more detail on that later.
